Capture from the top of your screen

Turn on the capture tab and the notch at the top of your Mac's screen becomes a way into Remindly. Rest the pointer on it to jot a note or check today's reminders, or drop a link or file on it to save it.

  • 1 minute
  • Works on Mac
  • macOS 15 or later

Turn it on

  1. Open Remindly → Settings → General.

Remindly needs to be running and signed in. It can be in the background.

  2. Switch on Show capture tab at the top of the screen.

The Remindly loop appears in the black just left of the notch, as if it were part of it. On a Mac without a notch, a small tab hangs from the middle of the menu bar instead.

Open it

  1. Rest the pointer on the loop or the notch for a moment.

The black grows out of the notch, sideways and down. Passing over it on the way to the menu bar doesn't open it.

  2. Pick Capture or Reminders at the top.

Capture is Quick Capture, with the same draft: what you start here is still there when you press ⌃⌥N, and the other way round. Click into it, type, and press ⌘↩ to save. With Remindly AI on, there's also Ask, to ask across your notes.

  3. Move the pointer away to put it back.

It tucks back into the notch half a second later. Once you've clicked into it to type, it stays until you press Esc or click somewhere else, so it doesn't vanish mid-sentence.

Today's reminders

Reminders lists what's overdue and what's still due today, overdue first.

  • Click the circle to mark a reminder done.
  • Click 1 Hour to be reminded again in an hour.
  • Click the title to open the note in Remindly.
  • More than six? Click … more in Reminders at the bottom to see them all in the main window.

For more on reminders, see Set reminders on your notes.

The next reminder and drops

The tab also widens a little on its own, without opening:

  • Ten minutes before a reminder, its time shows on the left of the notch and a countdown on the right. Rest the pointer on it to see which reminder it is.
  • Drag a file, a link or some text to the top of the screen. The tab says Save; let go, and it's saved as a new note in All Notes. The tab says Saved for a moment.

Drop a link from your browser's address bar and the note gets the page's title, ready to read later.

Good to know

  • It's on the screen with the menu bar, and hides while an app is full screen.
  • With App Lock on and Remindly locked, it opens to Capture only, and the next reminder shows its time without its title. More on App Lock.
  • No permissions needed. The tab doesn't ask for Accessibility or any other access.
  • Turn it off with the same switch in Remindly → Settings → General.

If something's not right

I don't see the loop next to the notch
Check that the switch is on in Remindly → Settings → General, that you're signed in, and that Remindly is running. Start Remindly when you log in so the tab is always there: add it in System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions. The tab also hides while an app is full screen.
It opens when I only meant to reach the menu bar
It waits for the pointer to stay put for about a quarter of a second, and opens only over the loop and the notch, not the rest of the top edge. If it opens anyway, move away and it tucks back half a second later.
It closed while I was typing
Click into the text before you type. Until you click, it treats the pointer leaving as done; after a click, it stays until Esc or a click elsewhere. Your draft is kept either way.
Is this on iPhone or iPad?
No, it's on the Mac only. On iPhone, the quickest ways in are the New Note button on the Lock Screen and "Add a note in Remindly" with Siri.
