Your notes are plain Markdown

Export everything as .md files whenever you like. No lock-in.

How to switch

Switch in three steps

Most of the work is Evernote's export. The import itself runs in the background.

  1. 1

    Export from Evernote

In the Evernote desktop app, right-click a notebook, choose Export Notebook… and pick ENEX. Do this for each notebook you want to bring.

  2. 2

    Import on your Mac

In Remindly for Mac, choose File → Import from Evernote… and select your .enex files. Each file becomes a notebook with the same name.

  3. 3

    You're done

Notes upload in the background and sync to Remindly on your iPhone. Keep working while it runs. Importing the same file again skips notes you already have.

What comes over

  • Every note, with its original created and updated dates
  • Tags, and the web address of clipped notes
  • Headings, lists, checklists, tables, links and code blocks
  • Images, PDFs and other attachments, in place in the note
  • Text Evernote recognized in your images, so they stay searchable
  • Reminders, and Evernote tasks as checklists inside their note, each with its due date

What doesn't come over (yet)

  • Times on task reminders: each task keeps its date, and the note reminds at the earliest one still open
  • Some links between notes: Remindly reconnects the ones it can match, and the rest still open Evernote
  • Tag hierarchy: nested tags arrive as flat tags
  • Notebook stacks: each .enex becomes its own notebook
  • Colors, fonts, font sizes and text alignment

FAQ

Questions from switchers

Do I need a Mac to import my notes?
Yes, for now. The Evernote importer is in the Mac app. After the import, your notes sync to the iPhone app. Importing directly on iPhone isn't available yet.
Which devices does Remindly run on?
There are native apps for iPhone (iOS 18 or later), iPad (iPadOS 18 or later) and Mac (macOS 15 or later), plus a web app. On Windows, install the web app from Edge or Chrome: it opens in its own window, but it needs a connection, because your notes aren't stored on the PC. There's no Android app.
Will my notes look the same?
The structure comes over: headings, bold and italic, lists, checklists, tables, links, code, images and attachments. Remindly stores notes as Markdown, so formatting Markdown can't express is dropped. That means text colors, fonts, font sizes and alignment.
What doesn't import?
Links from one note to another are reconnected where Remindly can match them to one of your notes, and the rest still open Evernote. Nested tags arrive as flat tags, and notebook stacks aren't kept because each .enex file becomes its own notebook. Attachments larger than 30 MB stay on your Mac and don't sync. Reminders and task due dates come over: each task keeps its date on its own line. A note holds one reminder, though, so of the times set on its tasks it reminds at the earliest one still open.
I have thousands of notes. Will the import cope?
Yes. The importer reads the export a note at a time instead of loading the whole file into memory, so multi-gigabyte exports are fine. If an import stops partway, run it again. Notes that are already in the notebook are skipped.
Are my scanned documents and images still searchable?
Yes. Images keep the text Evernote recognized in them, and PDFs have their text extracted on your Mac during the import. New photos and scans you add in Remindly are read on your device with Apple's text recognition.
Can I get my notes out of Remindly later?
Yes. In the Mac app, File → Export All Notes as Markdown… writes every note as a .md file, one folder per notebook, with attachments alongside. The folder opens in Obsidian or any text editor.
What does Remindly cost?
Remindly Free has no limit on notes or notebooks and includes 2 devices and 1 GB of attachments. Pro is $49 a year (or $5.99 a month) for unlimited devices and 100 GB of attachments. If you import an Evernote .enex file, your first year of Pro is $29. Compare the plans.
