Go back to an earlier version

Remindly keeps the earlier versions of every note as you edit it, on any device. Open Note History… to see when each version was saved and where, read one, and restore it if you need it back. Restoring is a change like any other, so you can undo it the same way.

  • 2 minutes
  • Works on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Web
  • Remindly Pro to open and restore
  • An internet connection

Open Note History

  1. Open the note.

Note History needs a connection to Remindly. Opening and writing notes never wait for it.

  2. On iPhone, iPad or Mac, open More and choose Note History…

In the web app, it's in the note's ⋯ menu. You can also touch and hold a note in the list, or right-click it, and choose Note History…

  3. Pick a version to read it.

The newest is at the top, marked Current: that's the note as it is now. Each version says when it was saved and where the change came from, such as your iPhone, Web or Claude. On iPhone the version opens on its own screen. On iPad, Mac and the web it shows beside the list.

A version is shown read-only, with its title, tags and checklists as they were. Nothing changes until you restore it.

Restore a version

  1. With the version you want showing, choose Restore This Version.

  2. Choose Restore This Version again to confirm.

The note's title, text and tags go back to that version's, and every device you're signed in to shows it. The note stays in the notebook it's in now.

Changed your mind? The note as it was before you restored is kept as a version too. Open Note History again and restore the one just below the top.

Edits you made on this device go to Remindly first, so they're kept in the history before the restore, not lost.

What's kept

  • A version for each stretch of editing. Changes from the same device a few minutes apart are one version. A new one starts after about 10 minutes away from the note, after an hour of steady editing, when you edit on another device, and each time you restore.
  • Every version from the last 30 days, then the last version of each day, for a year.
  • Changes from anywhere: the apps, the web app, Claude and ChatGPT, Email to Remindly, and people editing from a share link.
  • The title, the text and the tags. Images and files stay with the note, and a version shows the ones it had while they're still attached.
  • Not kept: pinning, reminders and moving to the Trash. They aren't changes to the note's text.
  • Locked notes keep no versions. Remindly stores only a locked note's encrypted text, so locking a note deletes its history, and it starts again after you remove the lock. See Lock a note or notebook.

Free and Pro

Every plan keeps a year of history and shows the list of versions. Opening an earlier version and restoring it are part of Remindly Pro. On Free, earlier versions show a lock, and the note as it is now always opens.

Nothing is deleted when you move between plans. Upgrade, and the history kept so far opens right away.

Shared notes

  • The owner and everyone who can edit see the note's history and can restore a version. People who can only view don't see Note History.
  • Someone else's changes show their name, never their device.
  • A restore changes the note for everyone it's shared with, like any edit.
  • On a note shared with you on its own, a restore puts back the title and text. Your tags and notebook for it are your own and stay as they are. In a shared notebook the tags go back too, since everyone shares them.
  • Pro on either side is enough: if you or the owner has Remindly Pro, you can open and restore earlier versions.

If something's not right

Note History isn't in the menu
It isn't offered for a locked note, a note in the Trash, or a note someone shared with you to view only.
It says opening earlier versions is part of Remindly Pro
On Free you see the list, and opening or restoring an earlier version needs Remindly Pro. If you just upgraded on the web, open Note History again and Remindly will know.
The version I want isn't in the list
Quick changes from one device are kept as one version, so a version holds the note as it was at the end of that stretch of editing. After 30 days only the last version of each day stays, and after a year a version goes. A locked note keeps none.
What is "Earlier version"?
The note as it was before its first change that Note History recorded. Notes written before Note History started have one, so you can go back to how they were.
I restored the wrong version
Open Note History again. The top version is your restore, and the one below it is the note as it was just before. Restore that one.
It says Note History needs a connection
The versions are kept by Remindly, not on your device. Connect to the internet and open it again. Your note itself opens and saves offline as always.
